COSMIC ROUNDUP - AURÉLIE POPPINS OF COCAINE PISS
Cocaine Piss were one of those bands that I had heard so much about but had never seen live. That nearly changed at Supernormal but my 5-year-old was fast asleep in the tent so I sat outside, listening to the set but still, sat there like a sad little puppy. However, I did FINALLY see them a couple of weeks later at ArcTangent. Wow, so great! Aurélie is possibly the greatest frontperson ever. She could give a fuck and if her antics don't put a big fat smile on your face then you are not a friend of mine. Cocaine Piss might be playing Cardiff next year (nudge nudge wink wink), so I thought now was a good time to chat to Aurélie and find out more about this delightful mega-force of a band.
Hi Aurélie, how are you?
I am fine. Currently eating leftover mac n cheese so I couldn’t be happier
Tell us about Cocaine Piss. How did you meet and how long have you been going etc?
I think we’ve been playing for 6 years or so. We’ve all been friends for a super long time, as we grew up in shitholes in the south of Belgium where nothing ever happens. We were all going to the punk shows, organizing some, playing music together or just hanging together all the time. At some point we all moved to Liège and had way more opportunities to do that shit better.
You must get asked about the name a lot so sorry for asking again. Does Cocaine Piss mean a piss that has cocaine in it or having a piss whilst on cocaine?
It really doesn’t mean anything, they’re just trashy words put together.
You love to get amongst the crowd whilst performing. Any funny incidents you want to tell us about?
Broke my foot once, but it’s not super funny. Got groped quite a few times, but again, really not funny. I love to go to the audience though, but I guess I like it better when nothing insane happens, when we can just all meet, dance and have fun together, which is the case 90% of the time.
Tell us about the Belgian scene and your favourite local bands etc.
I like our local scene because it is very creative, new bands, new projects all the time, and at the same time, it is not stupid competitive. It feels like there’s always room for new stuff and for everyone.
Impossible to pick my favourite local bands, there’s so fucking many. In general, I suck at picking my favourite anything, so good luck to me for the upcoming questions. Even animals, can’t have a favourite one, I have to make sub-categories.
What was the best gig you played in 2019?
No idea. But my favorite animal from the farm is the goat.
Best gig you attended?
Gabber Modus Operandi, at CTM festival in January then at beursschouwburg in Brussels in October. Also Altin Gun at Pukkelpop.
Best festival you attended?
Supernormal festival was really something special.
What are your favourite releases from 2019?
Again, I can’t really say, there was a lot of fantastic shit this year. Favorite animal of the forest is the fox, but I also love squirrels.
What the hell are you up to next year?
Writing new stuff. Trying new things with the band, in terms of performance or music. The more we do this, the more free we feel about experimenting. Weird collabs. Touring as much as we fucking can, obviously.
