COSMIC ROUNDUP: GORDON OF LUMINOUS BODIES, MELTING HAND AND TERMINAL CHEESECAKE
Imagine a world without this man. Horrible isn't it? Let's find out what's going on in probably the best rock-n-roll brain in the universe.
Hi Gordon, how are you?
We’re FINALLY getting a new Luminous Bodies album. What can we expect this time around?
There's a couple of punk bangers on there, a couple of psychic mad-ups, three rock-opera mini-epics and a dank lie. Lots of lyrics about friends, mortality and the nature of time. They include coded messages for one or two people, too. All the usual noise-rock fun!
I believe there’s a song called “Fuck the Beatles”. Bold Move. What’s your beef with them?
Oh, it was like: "how are we still going about them so far into the future?". Also, I thought they were the best thing ever... WHEN I WAS A SMALL CHILD! I knew all the words, had a Beatles songbook, etc. Then... I bought a copy of The Stooges "Funhouse" and after hearing one minute of that I knew that I'd been LIED TO. Lied to by the press, the majority culture. Lies. Plus, they're woven into an "Englishness" exceptionalism myth (not their fault, admittedly) that is just, IMO, the top of the slippery slope to nationalism. That they came from Irish backgrounds makes the appropriation even more annoying. Anyhow, just for balance, this song also insults people who work in social media and The Clash.
I was lucky enough to see you guys support your best mates Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs at the rather mahoosive Scala and a few other of their tour dates. What was that like from your side of the stage?
Ooo-wee, as Mr. Poopybutthole would say. Oh boy! They did us a massive favour by having us on. A lot of bands in their position don't give a shit about support acts but they've put on a lot of their mates at their sold-out shows. Have to credit them for that and we were so proud of them selling the place out. It was a treat to play a big place like that and a good percentage of the audience was generous enough to come in and watch us. Of course there was a typically chaotic moment when Zoo poured water all over his drums and I slipped in it and ended up on my back. It wouldn't be a Luminous Bodies show without some kind of accidental madness. The other tour dates were bangers too! Great audiences around the country who give the supports some err... support!
I hear Melting Hand have a release lined up for 2020. Tell us a bit more about the band and the noises we can expect to hear.
They do indeed! Writing and recording is going on as we speak... The line-up's the same as our previous LP "Faces Of Earth": the legendary Mike Vest on guitar, the mighty Tom Fug on drums and the sublime Marion Andrau on guitar (and me on bass). We're working in some deep headspace, so expect more abstract sounds, more psychedelia and more lid-flipping. It'll be coming out on Riot Season in the UK.
What was the best gig you played in 2019?
A lot to choose from! Brave Exhibitions in Newcastle was loads of fun, that Scala gig with Px7 was astounding and maybe the Christmas Carnage in Cardiff will turn out to be the one!? But I think I'll have to go for closing Raw Power - last band on the Sunday downstairs where we were surrounded by friends and it properly kicked off! PJ (of Michael) has made a promo film of that one, which is coming out fairly soon, too!
Best gig you attended?
Too many! Sorry, I just can't pick out one. All of them!
Best festival you attended?
Supernormal. It's always #1!
What are your favourite releases from 2019?
Another tough one! I listen to and buy so many releases each year, I find it very hard to pick out a particular favourite. Also, I help to run a record label, so obviously everything on Hominid Sounds is my favourite! Also, I'm playing on stuff I really love! Particularly proud of Terminal Cheesecake's "Le Sacre Du Lièvre" (Box Records). I've just looked up loads that I thought were '19 but were actually released in '17 or '18... so what do I know? Leaving those aside, and the many I've no doubt unfairly forgotten, here's a list!
Assetstripper "Heavy hard hitting music for the heavy hard of hearing music scene" (Tropical Cancer Rort)
Bloody Head "Narco Bulldozer/Black Dog Blues" (Viral Age/At War With False Noise)
Cartilage "Lung Butter EP" (Self released)
Centrum "För Meditation" (Rocket Recordings)
Deafkids "Metaprogramação" (Neurot Recordings)
Droves "Live Tape - 2K18" (Self released)
EntangleMints "EntangleMints" (Misophonia)
Hamer "Hamer" (Self released?)
Henge "Nothing Head" (God Unknown)
Hibushibire "Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out!" (Riot Season)
Lower Slaughter "Some Things Take Work" (Box Records)
Memes "Blah Blah Blah" (Six Tonnes De Chair)
No Negative "The Last Offices" (Drunken Sailor)
Oblivion Reptilian "Fried On Rock" (Sound Effect)
Ocean Floor "Mirror" (Self released)
Procrastinator "I'm Feeling Better Already" (Negate Everything)
Rainbow Grave "No You" (God Unknown)
Shit And Shine "Doing Drugs, Selling Drugs" (Riot Season)
Sly & The Family Drone "Gentle Persuaders" (Love Love)
Soft Issues "Soft Issues" (Opal Tapes)
Thank "Please" (Buzzhowl Records)
The Cosmic Dead "Scottish Space Race" (Riot Season)
USA/MEXICO "Matamoros" (Riot Season)
What the hell are you up to next year?
Working towards the downfall of the heteronormative patriarchy and getting those Tories out.
More Melting Hand: recording and live.
A Luminous Bodies tour to support the release of "Nah Nah Nah Yeh Yeh Yeh", plus I really want to record with Luminous Bodies this year and not have another 5-year gap between albums!
I recently recorded a couple of guest guitar tracks on a Deafkids/Petbrick session (Deafbrick? Petkids? No, not Petkids... that would be wrong) that might possibly see the light of day in 2020.
Releasing loads of great bands on Hominid Sounds.
Honing my Pedal Steel skills...
